Mrs. B. R. Thomas –
One of my biggest regrets was selling this lens to buy the Sony 90 mm macro. The Sony/Zeiss 55 mm F1.8 is literally the sharpest lens I’ve ever owned (with the Sony/Zeiss 35 mm F2.8 coming in at a close 2nd). It produces some of the most outstanding image quality I’ve ever seen. That and its quality construction justifies the price. If you’re on the fence between this one and the Sony 50 mm F1.8 and you have money to burn, the 55 mm is a no-brainer. Remember, you get what you pay for.

I have used this lens only twice on the gimbal, at events. Most of the time it autofocuses well, but there are moments when it takes 5 seconds to keep up. Not sure why. Little frustrating. I noticed that it also has issues focusing in low light. When shooting weddings this is another disappointment for me. Also, the lens on the product photo shows Carl Zeiss. My lens says only Zeiss. The font looks differently as well. Also, any unboxing videos I have seen show the box prints looking slightly different than on my box. It makes me question the authenticity of the product.

A little bit of backstory: I got into photography as a hobby, via work. I was asked to take photos during an event, having never operated a professional grade camera or taken a photography class in my life. I fell in love after that and have wanted to learn and save to get my own camera at some point. The office camera I was using was a Nikon D7200 DSLR.Fast forward, after a lot of research, I decided to get a Sony a7III as my very first camera. I read one of the most important aspects to having a good camera body is having equally good glass. Now that leads me to the Zeiss. I knew for my first lens I wanted something quality and I wanted to start with a prime. From my photos at work I realized 50mmish was about what a lot of them were taken at.Further research lead me to this lens. All the reviews praised it highly. After a bit of use it was clear why. Everything about this lens is outstanding. Its unbelievably sharp and the AF is lightning quick and quiet. The color is beautiful. Its not bulky or heavy.I got a used one on ClickElectronics for a great price but it really is worth every penny. I am incredibly happy to have made this my first lens. I really cannot praise or recommend it enough!

This lens is incredibly sharp. Combined with the Sony a7III, it’s allowed me to take wonderful photos of my children. The fast focusing and sharpness have resulted in a large number of “keepers”. Daytime outdoor photos are extremely sharp. Indoors, I can shoot without flash for more pleasing photos that capture the ambience. I previously used Canon with the 35mm Art lens which was also very sharp. But the slow autofocusing resulted in fewer keeper shots. This lens is expensive, but I think it’s worth it to capture the precious moments that I want to cherish and remember forever for my young children.
