Like the other ‘Art’ primes, it’s wonderful optically, but the AF performance is poor. And I mean, so poor that if you really need accurate focus, then you should think of these lenses as essentially manual. The 24 and 35mm lenses focus wherever they like as well, and I used to have the 18-35mm DX lens that was similarly shocking, but there’s more DOF with these shorter lenses so it’s less critical. The 50 is such a pain that I ended up buying the Nikon 50mm f/1.8 G for those occasions when I need AF! Even in live view it’s very inconsistent, and bear in mind I’ve had three samples of this lens so I’m not just describing a problem with an outlier. Actually after fine tuning in the camera (D810) it’s more consistent using PDAF for some strange reason! So, optically, yes, it’s great. But only buy it if you’re going to be focussing manually on a tripod in magnified live view. If focussing isn’t critical for your application because you shoot stopped well down then get the Nikkor 1.8 G, because there’s not much difference after f/4. Or if you need AF, get the Nikkor. As far as the optics go, the professional reviewers are right. There’s hardly any distortion or CA, the bokeh’s OK, and it’s giddyingly sharp (if you can get the damn thing in focus!). But it’s big and heavy and focuses all over the place left to its own devices, so unless you’ve got some special requirement for staggering sharpness at bright apertures, honestly I’d go for the Nikon 1.8G. It’s cheaper, lighter, and focuses a lot more accurately.

A magnificent piece of glass. I’ve actually been very happy with my Nikkor 50mm 1.8G on my D610 but everybody kept talking about the Art series so I decided to try it (especially when I saw the 44% price drop). Arrived to Bulgaria in a single day! The contrast, bokeh and sharpness are truly extraordinary. Highly recommended.

OH MY GOD !!! you will not be disapointed with this lens, if you are , you made a mistake and bought the wrong lens for the job. It is SO clear just perfect, it is heavy but not too much you will love useing it.

This lens is what I call a cracker. You know when you buy a lens and take the first shot and take a sneaky look at the back of the camera and “YOU GET THAT FEELING” of warmth. This lens has that feeling knowing you made the right choice.I will not go into the tech of it as if your looking at this, well you must know what your doing to start with.I put a sample image along with this review for your enjoyment but it will not look as good by the time the file is crush to death but it will give you a fair idea.My advice, Just buy it and if you work in Nikons or Canons labs are your that picky, well you can always send it back..I personally love it for my portraits.10/10.

Solid, pin sharp, worth the money.

This is probably the best f1.4 lens I have ever used, well worth the asking price. The only problem I have is with ClickElectronics – and this applies to all the lenses I have bought from the site – is that the rrp is untrue. You think you have a bargain but you are paying the standard price – I’ve checked with many retailers on-line. So ClickElectronics stop trying to fool us, tell the truth about the price we pay because we are certainly not ‘saving’ £s.

After using Nikon 50mm f1.4 commercially for the last 12 years I switched to this lens last week. I shoot photography with Nikon D800 and video with Sony a7sII. On both cameras this lens is simply outstanding and much better than the Nikon. It’s heavy but that only adds to the feel of quality. Nothing to complaint about, great sharpness, great bokeh, great quality build. – I highly recommend it to anyone who wants a superior prime lens.
