Having bought a 18-200 Nikkor lens for my D7200, I was distinctly unimpressed by its low light abilities. It felt strangled, as did I when using it.It should have been a great all-purpose lens, compact with a fantastic range. But it didn’t cut the mustard.Enter the Nikkor 17-55mm f2.8.It’s a constant f2.8, which is a relief. Now suddenly the camera is far more useful. Its built like a brick, solid and water resistant, which matches the body. No more worries about being caught out in a shower.Near silent focussing.35mm equivalent of 24-82mm still allows for convenience over prime lenses.Yes its costly, but do what I did and buy good used. I would never pay £900 for this lens, but the £300 I paid, it was a no-brainer, plus you won’t worry about every little scratch that you might get. Its a field lens after all, and aimed most appropriately at the professional or semi-pro, so the odd scratch is expected and more kudos for that! Its a couple of hundred grams heavier than the 18-200, and no doubt significantly heavier than a 18-55, but somehow it doesn’t feel wrong. If I were to put words to it, I would say it feels balanced. My D7200 has the additional battery grip, and portrait mode feels better than ever now. Yes, I know I’m carrying this combo now, but one doesn’t mind lugging it about when the shots taken are as sharp as they are!I will likely keep the 18-200, but I can’t see it being used much any more now I own this beast. In fact, if I’ve not used it in the next 12 months, it will probably go. Would I ever sell the 17-55? No way! This is a constant, and if I lose/break/damage this one, I will get another. Conclusion:Probably the best lens you will ever own. Possibly the most important lens Nikon make for the DX range. When coupled with the outstanding sensor that the D7200 has, its the perfect match.

Although I would never suggest only having one lens for your camera this one really does do it all and worth every penny of the asking price. Its pin sharp wide open and across all focal lengths.
