Without a doubt, this is the best DX mid-range zoom out there. It’s expensive, yes. But you get what you pay for: brilliantly sharp optics, even wide open; fantastic bokeh; beautiful colours. Prior to purchasing this, I’d tried out both the Sigma 17-70mm and a few copies of the Tamron 17-50mm. The Sigma comes nowhere near close. The Tamron is fine. However, it doesn’t have the sharpness of the Nikon. Nor does it have the wonderful bokeh nor the colour rendition. The build quality of the Nikon is of professional quality. This thing will last you for years. Yes, it’s heavy and built like a tank and is not for the faint hearted after a long trek. And it costs up to three times more than the Tamron (although you can pick up a good copy for around £550 if you look hard enough). But, put this thing onto your Nikon body and it will take it to another level. That is something the Tamron won’t do.

Buy this lens for the fantastic build quality. The optics are nice and sharp and it’s perfectly balanced on my D200. I’ve treated this lens badly, it’s been up mountains with me and to some seriously cold places (Svalbard). I’ve even slipped and had it smash down on hard rocks taking out a small chip of metal from the casing, the body suffered no dents (besides the chip) and the focusing and zoom rings are still as smooth as the day I brought it, optics unaffected. This lens is built amazingly well and will probably last longer than me.

If you only buy one lens make sure its this one.

This was an expensive purchase for me ……… & not taken lightly ….. all I can say to anyone thinking of purchasing this lens is ….it is a joy in every way & all the positive reviews you have read about it are true, it is indeed for the serious photographer to be sure & yes , it is quite heavy but as others before me have remarked , it delivers ! . & I must also say , it gives you a new found confidence . The last thing I will add about this great piece of glass is, it really is Mr flexible , you could, at a pinch, do an entire Wedding with just this one lens .
