Amazing watch and durability is great

So this is my second Garmin sports watch. First was the Forerunner 205 (going back a bit). Previously had a Polar V800.I bought this watch earlier in the week for £349 off ClickElectronics and notice the price has jumped back up again. Same happened for the Fenix 5 Plus. Was £449 and back up to £550. Was going to go for the 5 Plus but as I noticed the price hike, that put me off so went for the 5. After all, only seem to be a few minor differences between models and wasnt fussed about spotify etc.The build quality of the watch to me seems to be solid so far. Hasn’t had any real tests yet so I will be back in 12 months time to update review. In comparison, my Polar V800, I had to change straps twice in 4 years of ownership, which is poor considering the price. Garmin 205, never in 7 years of ownership, so hopefully the Fenix 5 straps are durable. So far I have turned off mobile notifications as that became annoying very quickly, albeit works very well. I have turned off active tracking and also the HR monitor as all these eat up battery life. Afterall, only interested in this data when training.Furthermore, the Garmin Connect and watch tuning takes some time when used to the Polar Sync platform. Polar is all web based for editing watch set up, but what I like about my new Garmin, I can edit the data directly on the watch itself.Uploaded a photo of watch. Distance was in miles and wondered why pace didnt seem right when walking. Donned on me that the pace was still set to KM! So every little piece of data can be edited to suit. Both are now set to miles. Also, the temperature…. 20 degrees when you can see slithers of snow in background…Will report further in 12 months time unless a major change.

Great piece of kit

Awesome piece of kit. Tracks my running and strength work in the gym really well and has tons of data for me to analyse (great if you are a bit of a stat geek). Look forward to using all the other features as I have only scratched the surface so far.I have been playing with the watch, done a total of 6 hours of activity using GPS and 3 hours in the gym and still have 40% battery 6 days since last charge, which is superb.

Great piece of kit, I have had this for a couple of months now and have used it when running, cycling, walking, hiking, at the gym, playing golf and kitesurfing and its performed brilliantly. Its a great motivator too as tracks activities such as daily steps and floors climbed etc. and encourages you take the active option when you’re out and about. One thing though, the bezel marks super easy which can spoil the look ofthe watch, I bought a soft silicon case and a glass protector for the watch all of which works fine and keeps the watch scratch free, but hey it is a watch to be used in activities, so “battle damage” is going to be pretty much a given. All in all if you are looking for a great piece of wearable tech this is one to consider, I would but again no question.

Initially, when I first received the fenix 5 I was a vary happy customer. Although rather bulky, that’s unavoidable with current technology, and I at last had a device for my wrist that could track my activities that passed the 24 hour mark. The problems began in earnest when the fenix 5 began updating itself. From this point on, the device became troublesome. It wouldn’t obtain a GPS signal when I asked it to begin an activity. I find I have to hard reset the watch, have it on my wrist for an extended period of time (hours) and if I’m lucky I can record an activity. I start the watch hours before a 24 hour race and it performs like a boss throughout. the one and only time the watch did as I asked on the day of an event. Some time later, 30 minutes before the start of a hard and hilly trail marathon and the red line is only gaining a few pixels each minute. I’ve seen this many times already. It might work some hours from now, but I know it’s going to refuse to be ready in time for the race. When it finally says it’s got a lock, the activity will not begin recording. It’s there, telling me how fast I’m moving, says it has a GPS lock, but sits there refusing to begin recording. It’s a fully supported race, I only need to carry a couple of packs of Clif Bloks, but end up having to physically carry my mobile phone with Strava running just to have a record of what I’ve done. 4 hours later, I ask the watch to start recording and it does, just 27 miles too late…That’s not the only issue. Now, when I connect the watch via USB to my win10 desktop PC – nothing. It won’t see it. Windows tells me there’s an unknown device with an error, the phone freaks out seemingly connecting and disconnecting in a fraction of a second. It’s happy to charge eventually, but it and Garmin Connect do not want to talk to each other.Troubleshooting doesn’t help. Attempting to power down & do the “have you tried turning it off and on again” tried & trusted technique, the watch freezes. The graphical representation of a second hand stops ticking. Google & youtube suggest a hard reset. The watch powers down & comes back on… but the same issues continue. I can’t rely on this watch to do anything but tell the time, so practically useless for my needs.Stuck, I contact ClickElectronics and thankfully they agree to refund it, and I re-order the same model hoping the first was a lemon.New fenix 5 arrives – yay! Out of the box, charged up, off to test it – fine, no problems! Then the watch wants to update itself to the latest firmware – it’s a higher number than the last, so hopefully this is the one that fixed the issues last time – fingers crossed! I’m on firmware 11 now and… same problems. The watch, while perfect the day after it arrived and on a full charge, now it’s on firmware 11 cannot find a GPS fix. Refuses to begin activities. Requires hard reboots to even function. I manage to sync an activity over bluetooth via the app on my tablet… but this is not convenient, I want to plug it in, have it fire stuff to my account & Strava, and forget about it – just as I’ve done with my simple TomTom Spark for years. It’s nice to want things.Another day, another failed GPS lock. The watch tells me it has new firmware to install. It constantly fails to install it itself and tells me to connect it to my computer. My computer does not want to know, it’s just as ignorant to its presence as the last. Would firmware 12 end my woes? I’ll never know. I resort to having the watch talk to my tablet to sync – it takes 40 minutes for them to even acknowledge the other exists, but syncing is far too much to ask for. My activity is stuck on the watch and my patience with Garmin watches reaches breaking point. After I discuss my computer setup, all the troubleshooting steps I’ve exhausted, ClickElectronics once again agree to take it back for a full refund. 10/10 for ClickElectronics customer service, 1/10 for Garmin Fenix 5.Bought a Suunto Spartan Ultra Stealth Titanium. All I ask is that it just works. In the meantime, the TomTomSpark and my phone are comboing my activites like Garmin never could.
