A very versatile lens that produces excellent results throughout the range. Reasonably light. Useful lock in retracted position makes for easier carriage.

I tend to use this more than any of my other lens.Be careful of reading an old review of this lens as it has been well improved on.

This is a great lens to have on your camera for a nice walk without taking a bulky camera bag with you. I have obtained wildlife shots that I would otherwise have missed. It does not have the quiet ultrasonic motor I am used to with my other Canon lenses, but this motor is not that noisy, and I have become used to it. This is one of the older lenses in the Canon line up, and they really should update it, as the range is very useful. It is my most often used lens now.

It was clear to me as soon as I opened the box that this was a good lens and testing it under various lighting conditions and settings showed that this was well made and sharp. It produces a lovely gentle bokeh and that renders it a super portrait lens as well as a great all rounder. So why only 4 stars? Well, if canon had included a lens hood and not been so mean as to try and get us to buy a canon one for £30+ (I bought a third party one for less than a tenner inc postage)then it would have been 5 stars.

This lens was purchased for one reason … travelling. If I’m out for the day, specifically to take photographs, then this lens won’t be with me. However, for those times you want to take your camera as part of another activity, then what better than the flexibility of an 18-200mm lens? Of course, it doesn’t have the true quality of an ‘L’ lens or even some of the more expensive EFS lenses like my 17-55mm f2.8. But, if you are looking for a great ‘walkabout’ or travel lens, this one does the job very well. It is a little more noisy than its ultrasonic brothers and sisters when focussing, but again it completes the task efficiently. Other useful features are a lock for the zoom function, and being able to focus on a subject as close as 45cm, even at the 200mm setting. It has Canon’s remarkably good IS system, technically allowing 4 stops below the normal shutter speeds for sharp handheld shots. In summary, don’t expect the same quality of photograph as prime or ‘L’ zoom lenses will provide, but as an all-rounder it delivers great results.

A friend had one of these and reccommended it to me! Glad he did! This is a compact multi purpose lightweight lens, it goes with my cropped sensor SLR giving me the equivalent of a 29 – 320 zoom! Unless you need to go to extremes, this is a one lens fits all product, and as keeping the weight factor down, is important to me, it’s ideal! OK it’s not an “L” grade lens, but then I’m not an “L” grade photographer, just an amateur trying hard! It’s also good for close up shots, the only disappointment, for me, is that 1.4 and 2 times converters don’t fit, it would be brilliant if they did!Other people, far more experienced than me, will tell you all the technical ins and outs. The best thing I can tell you is that I’m WELL PLEASED with this lens!
