Used for taking shots of bugs, especially timid ones where I need a bit more reach on the lens without having to be a few inches away from the subject. Autofocus is blisteringly fast and made even better with the fact you can adjust the focal range with a switch on the side of the lens. Image quality – even on a cropped sensor camera is stunning. In my opinion, definitely worth the price, feels good, takes great shots and can feel the quality. Comes with a lens hood which can be turned around and stored on the lens when not in use (at the trade off with been able to use manual focus). All in all, incredibly happy with it although now after getting my first ‘L’ series lens – I want to upgrade all of my other lenses to ‘L’ too…best get saving.

This is a fantastic lens. Pin sharp with a smooth and creamy bokeh. The IS system is very effective but you will still need a tripod if you are focusing down to 1:1 or thereabouts. Use the focus limiters as you will find it tends to hunt quite a lot if you are not in the right range. The biggest thing you need to know about this lens it to make sure the IS system has stopped running and is “parked” before you remove it from the lens. I have not done this a couple of times in haste and it leaves the inner element in a free state, rather than being locked safely in place, rattling around inside the body, which can be a bit scary initially and could cause damage over time if not addressed. However, the two times I have had this happen, it has not caused any damage whatsoever and the lens is still in perfect condition and functionality. Well worth every penny of the price. It is a bargain in my mind and is rarely off my camera. I also use it as a general walk-about lens for landscapes and portraits etc. However, it is, as I said, pin sharp and can show up details that you might not want to see! 😉

Please note – some of the reviews here are for the non-L macro lens. Just to be clear, this is for the Canon EF 100mm f2.8L Macro IS USM Lens. This is, quite honestly, a stunning lens – and I write as someone who has several L-series lenses. Image quality is startling – better than my go-to EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM; colour rendition faithful and bright. (Of course, it is a prime lens, but even so.)As a walk-around lens, this has performed well for me as a medium telephoto – making me think about composition and using the “foot-zoom” has been fun. It is very well made and solid in feel without being heavy – as you’d expect from an L-series lens, build quality is excellent. But of course it is the macro performance that is the best feature of this lens. Close focus is excellent, and the (supplied) lens hood allows you to get very close to the subject without worrying about contact with the glass – a real benefit of the 100mm macro lens against those with shorter focal lengths. The aperture of 2.8 is fast enough for hand-held performance in decent light – of course, at this aperture depth of field is VERY narrow: see the picture of the caterpillar for an image captured at f2.8; the burnets were captured at f5.6 – you can see the wider depth of field; the (white and pink) Great Masterwort was taken at f20.In short, this is probably my favourite lens. I’d give 6 stars if I could!

Works fine with no complaints. No IS on that lens so image stabilization is up to the shooter NOT the lens.

Un lente que me ha dejado mas que satisfecho, un precio razonable y de gran calidad mecánica y óptica. Tiene un bokeh delicioso y en luz escasa se comporta de gran manera, produciendo imágenes claras y nítidas. Gran compra, recomendado.

If you are looking for high quality images, especially on a budget, you cannot lose with this lens. It is my “GO TO” lens for studio portraiture, and when compared to other lenses I’ve tried, this one captures a TON of detailed resolution with great color rendition. Outside it’s great to, super sharp, and in certain shots it can give your pictures that 3D look that everyone covets. Auto focus is ALWAYS spot on, almost never misses a shot, and it’s quick too. Chromatic aberration is there at f2, but not as bad as the 85 1.8, and it’s easily removed in Lightroom or Photoshop. Bokeh is nice and creamy, and at f2 you get a lot of it at 100mm, more than the 85 @ 1.8 due to the longer focal length. The only negative thing I can say about it is the minimum focus distance, close to 3 ft, it’s no macro lens for sure. However, at least it’s not the 5 feet or so of the 70-200. I’ve owned two of these lenses, and used them both on the full frame 5D2, so I cannot speak to the APC crowd. At full frame it’s obviously a bit tight using this indoors, and for APC it would pretty much not be something you would use indoors, except for portraits. As a side-note, the first one of these I owned was in TERRIBLE condition. It was scratched, and there was so much dirt and dust in the lens I actually laughed out loud in disbelief. Looked like someone dropped it in the sand and rolled it around for an hour or two. BUT, and this is a big but, it did not affect the image quality in the least. Not at all. So if you’re on the fence, worrying about buying used lenses and having reduced image quality, don’t. I’ts not an issue. The only reason I got rid of that first one was because the manual focus ring was full of grit and could barely turn. But I’ll never get rid of this second one. : )

I think this is a great lens, especially if you are looking to use it for portraiture, where this lens really shines on a full frame camera. I will probably be in the minority here, but when I got my 5D MIII, I purchased this lens along with the Canon 135mm F/2L for a side to side comparison. While the 135m is a fine piece of glass (and heavy at that) and produced some very pleasing photos, I did not think the photo quality that the 135mm showed over the 100mm F/2 justified the $550 premium the 135mm costs over the 100mm. I also did not like how long the 135mm was, I have zooms that covered that range. The pictures that I have taken with the 100mm F/2 have absolutely shined for me, the lens has a snappy focus (not as fast as the 135MM F/2L), but very capable of keeping up with my active 2 ½ year old both in and outdoors. My current trinity of prime lenses is the Canon 35mm F/2, Canon 50mm F/1.4 and this the Canon 100 F/2. If you have a 50mm lens on a full frame, I think the more logical portrait prime to supplement the 50mm is the 100mm over the Canon 85mm F/1.8. As both lenses offer identical build quality of the 100mm F/2 and the added reach of the 100mm over the 85mm is a small but added bonus.Hope this write up helps you out.
